If you used to use Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) then you will be pleased to know it's back and is now called Prodigy.

Prodigy is aimed at those working in primary care and is an online source of evidence-based information about over 300 conditions that commonly occur in primary care. Topics are updated monthly and there are a wide variety of patient information leaflets available.

It is free to use but by registering you can subscribe to e-bulletins and personalise the website.

NHS Evidence has had a bit of a revamp over the last few weeks.

The main changes are:

Topic pages for major subjects - these bring together the main guidelines, commissioning information, patient information, ongoing research and medicines information in a range of conditions.

Healthcare databases - you can now access databases, e-books and journals with your Athens account from this page, rather than the seperate National Library for Health page.

NICE Pathways - brings all NICE guidance and advice together, and complements the existing Map of Medicine pathways.

Changes to library services for UCLan students

From today library services to UCLan students on placement at East Lancashire Hospitals will be provided by the Trust. UCLan books held at the Blackburn and Burnley libraries have now been transferred to the NHS system and you will need to have your Trust ID badge to borrow them.

UCLan books held at Preston can be requested through the Distance Learning Service and will be delivered direct to your home.

Help with database searching will be available from the UCLan Training Team.

The University will continue to purchase books to support students on placement, in partnership with the NHS library service.

World Book Day is a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and is marked in over 100 countries around the globe. The origins of the day we now celebrate in the UK and Ireland come from Catalonia, where roses and books were given as a gift to loved ones on St. Georges Day - a tradition started over 90 years ago.

One of the aims of World Book Day is to encourage people to explore the pleasures of books and reading.

To celebrate this day anyone who visits either of our libraries on 3rd March 2011 will be entered into a prize draw to win a goodie bag!

Some changes to library services for UCLan students on placement

From 31st March there will no longer be a UCLan staff presence in the site library, and library services to UCLan students on placement will be managed by the NHS Trust.

• The clinical site libraries will continue to provide library services to UCLan students who are on placement with their local Trust.

• UCLan books currently held at the clinical sites will be transferred to the local NHS library system. All books on loan must be returned to the site from which they were issued.

• UCLan books held in Preston may be requested for loan through the Distance Learning Service. Books will be delivered directly to your home address. For more information please see:

This is the third evidence update on patient and carer engagement in chronic disease management and we have continued to broaden the scope of the literature we accessed, in order to reflect the widening field of supportive and end of life care.

Urinary incontinence (NHS Evidence - kidney diseases and male urogenital disorders; NHS Evidence - women's health)
The Kidney Diseases and Male Urogenital Disorders Specialist Collection and the Women's Health Specialist Collection have identified and reviewed new evidence on the diagnosis and management of urinary incontinence published during the last 12 months. The Kidney Diseases and Male Urogenital Disorders Specialist Collection presents evidence published since the release of the NICE guideline on Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms which has been reviewed by urologists from the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, and the Women's Health Specialist Collection provides an update on the latest evidence on the management of female urge urinary incontinence/overactive bladder and the pharmacotherapy, surgical and conservative management of female stress urinary incontinence.

NHS EVIDENCE - Annual Updates for December

Alcoholic liver disease (NHS Evidence - gastroenterology and liver diseases)
NHS Evidence – gastroenterology and liver diseases will be publishing its second Evidence Update on alcoholic liver diseases on 6 December 2010. Alcohol misuse produces a spectrum of liver injury ranging from simple fatty change through alcoholic hepatitis to cirrhosis and, in some 20% of individuals, to hepatocellular carcinoma. We will be presenting an overview of the best systematic reviews from the past year, along with commentaries from experts in the field. We will also provide links to useful policy documents and other items of interest.

Malignancies post kidney transplant (NHS Evidence - kidney diseases and male urogenital disorders)
The 2010 update of the Annual Evidence Update on post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) will be live on the 6 December 2010. We have reviewed the literature for relevant systematic reviews, randomised controlled trials and cohort studies, and assessed the impact of this new evidence published since the introduction of the BSH/BTS guidelines for the diagnosis and management of PTLD which were published in June 2010.

CAM for lower back pain (NHS Evidence - complementary and alternative medicine)
The fourth Annual Evidence Update on CAM for Low Back Pain will be published on 13 December. This update aims to present a comprehensive collection of up-to-date information that has been subject to rigorous selection criteria. We have carried out searches in a number of databases, covering the period from September 2009 to October 2010. The update includes a list of systematic reviews, meta-analyses and selected randomised controlled trials, along with commentaries from experts.

Familial hypercholesterolaemia (NHS Evidence - genetic conditions)
NHS Evidence - genetic conditions is publishing its second Annual Evidence Update on Familial Hypercholesterolaemia on 13 December 2010. It is over two years since NICE clinical guidance 71 Identification and management of familial hypercholesterolaemia was published and the topic continues to generate interest among healthcare professionals. This update includes a list of relevant guidelines, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and selected randomised controlled trials published in the last year, together with a commentary written by a relevant expert.

Headache (NHS Evidence - neurological conditions)
The Neurological Conditions Specialist Collection is launching its third Annual Evidence Update (AEU) on Headache on 13 December. The Project Team has carried out a systematic literature search on headache to identify all high level evidence published since the date of the last Headache AEU in August 2009, including guidelines, systematic reviews, health technology assessments and economic evaluations. Leading headache and migraine experts from around the UK have read and appraised these for their validity and relevance to the busy clinician. A list of the papers deemed worthy of inclusion, along with expert commentaries by our reviewers, will be freely available on the site. We have also identified uncertainties in research to contribute to the DUETs database (see www.library.nhs.uk/duets for more details).

Spinal diseases (NHS Evidence - trauma and orthopaedics)
NHS Evidence - trauma and orthopaedics in conjunction with NHS Evidence - musculoskeletal have produced an Annual Evidence Update on Spinal Diseases. As in previous years, we have included guidelines and systematic reviews which have been published within the last year. This Annual Evidence Update includes reviews covering disc surgery and minimally invasive surgery along with various therapies and treatments. This topic should be of particular interest to all health professionals working in this field.

This update will present the evidence published since the 2009 update on the following topics:

Supportive and palliative care in chronic lung disease (NHS Evidence - supportive and palliative care)
This Annual Evidence Update addresses supportive and palliative care issues in people with chronic respiratory disease and will focus on two of the most important issues for patients with pulmonary problems. The first is dyspnoea (or breathlessness). This symptom is usually one of the most prevalent in surveys of problems associated with respiratory and also many other systemic illnesses. The second specific topic is cough, which is less common but can nevertheless be just as distressing for patients with cancer and other chronic conditions.

HIV/AIDs (NHS Evidence - infections and NHS Evidence - National Library for Public Health)
To coincide with World Aids Day on 1 December NHS Evidence - infections is launching its Annual Evidence Update on HIV and TB co-infection and the National Library for Public Health (NLPH) will be publishing its Annual Evidence Update on HIV/AIDS - Behaviour change in high-risk populations.

The Annual Evidence Update from NHS Evidence - infections will focus on HIV and TB co-infection, with guidelines, systematic reviews and other evidence that has emerged in the last 12 months. Experts in the field have written commentaries, and links to useful websites are also provided.

Expert commentaries include:
* The global overview of HIV and TB co-infection
* An overview of the BHIVA guidelines for treatment of HIV and TB co-infection
* Clinical implications of HIV and TB co-infection for GPs
* An overview of HIV and TB co-infection in the UK
* Diagnostic tests and guidelines

The Annual Evidence Update from the National Library for Public Health will identify and contextualise all high-level evidence and guidelines published in the last 12 months on behaviour change interventions in high-risk populations including ethnic minorities, gay men, injecting drug users, commercial sex workers, and other populations. The NLPH has teamed up with experts in the field of sexual health to evaluate the evidence.

Special care dentistry (NHS Evidence - oral health)
NHS Evidence - oral health presents its third Annual Evidence Update on the topic of Special Care Dentistry. The 2010 Update is published to coincide with meetings of the two professional societies for special care dentistry (British Society for Disability and Oral Health and British Society of Gerodontology). The Update brings together new guidance and systematic reviews relevant to Special Care Dentistry that have been published since the last update, accompanied by a commentary on the evidence.

Stroke (NHS Evidence - stroke)
Following on from the last Annual Evidence Update in November 2009, this update for health professionals and patients will present significant advances in knowledge about stroke rehabilitation. Topics will include organisation of care, upper limbs, mobility, speech and language, basic personal needs, cognition and perception and living with stroke. There will also be a section on uncertainties identified and, as usual, expert summaries will be included to help make sense of the new evidence presented.

We are currently participating in a trial to the web-based version of Oxford Textbook of Medicine, 5th edition.

The trial runs until 30th November 2010 and you can access it here with your NHS Athens account.

The online version features the entire content of the printed textbook, with over 600 contributions. It also offers:

· Over 2,500 full colour images downloadable for personal use in presentations
· A portal to further knowledge through online reference links to PubMed, ISI and CrossRef
· Updates available from 2011

Epilepsy (NHS Evidence - neurological conditions)
The Neurological Conditions Specialist Collection Project Team has carried out a systematic literature search on Epilepsy to identify all high level evidence published since the date of the last Epilepsy Annual Evidence Update in 2009, including guidelines, systematic reviews, health technology assessments and economic evaluations. Leading epilepsy experts from around the UK have read and appraised these for their validity and relevance to the busy clinician. A list of the papers deemed worthy of inclusion, along with expert commentaries by our reviewers, will be freely available on the site at from 6 September. This year we have continued to identify uncertainties in research to contribute to the DUETs project (see www.library.nhs.uk/duets for more details).

Gastrointestinal symptoms in supportive and palliative care (NHS Evidence - supportive and palliative care)
The latest update from NHS Evidence - supportive and palliative care focuses on the best new evidence on treatments for anorexia and cachexia in chronic disease and palliative care.

Alzheimer's disease and dementia (NHS Evidence - later life)
The Annual Evidence Update (AEU) aims to provide healthcare professionals with a clear path to the most important recent evidence surrounding the five major types of dementia: Alzheimer’s, Vascular dementia, Dementia with Lewy bodies, Frontotemporal dementia and Mixed dementias. The Dementia AEU provides bibliographies on secondary research (systematic reviews, meta analyses and guidelines) on the following topics:

1. Definitions, Diagnosis and Screening
2. Risk Factors and Aetiology
3. Pharmacological Treatments
4. Non-Pharmacological Treatments
5. Models of Dementia Care
6. Evidence on Other Dementias

Diabetic Retinopathy (NHS Evidence - diabetes)
Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of blindness in working age people in the UK. The Annual Evidence Update on Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) provides an opportunity to present an up-to-date comprehensive collection of information that has been subject to rigorous selection criteria. The coverage of the Annual Evidence Update has been developed on the basis of topics suggested by UK diabetic retinopathy experts. Information is organised by topic areas and links are provided within each topic to the relevant systematic reviews, primary research, guidelines and patient information. Topics include: incidence and prevalence of DR, epidemiology and progression of DR, factors influencing development of DR, screening for DR, treatment, surgery, modern therapies, blindness and visual impairment, and assessment of retinopathy by automated computer algorithm.

Eczema (NHS Evidence - skin disorders)
NHS Evidence - skin disorders is producing its fourth Annual Evidence Update on Atopic Eczema on 13 September 2010, with the results of a search for new national guidance and systematic reviews published since the 2009 Annual Evidence Update. There will be the Library’s usual “what’s new” analysis, discussing the new evidence and its implications for clinical practice — this year written by Professor Hywel Williams and Dr Kave Shams.

Osteoarthritis (NHS Evidence - musculoskeletal and NHS Evidence - trauma and orthopaedics)
This is the fourth Annual Evidence Update on osteoarthritis produced by NHS Evidence - musculoskeletal in conjunction with NHS Evidence - trauma and orthopaedics and includes the results of a search for new national guidance and systematic reviews published since August 2009. To accompany this update, there will be commentaries discussing the new evidence.

Surgical aspects of faecal incontinence (NHS Evidence - surgery, anaesthesia, perioperative and critical care)
NHS Evidence – surgery, anaesthesia, perioperative and critical care will be publishing its third Annual Evidence Update on the surgical management of faecal incontinence. The update will coincide with National Continence Awareness Week 2010 beginning 20 September. NICE guidance on faecal incontinence (CG49) was published in June 2007 based on literature published prior to October 2006. Having published the second update in September 2009, this AEU will highlight relevant, good quality evidence published between July 2009 and July 2010, focusing specifically on surgical management (including biofeedback and implants).

Amblyopia (NHS Evidence - eyes and vision)
Clinicians treating ophthalmic disease in children always have to consider, and often have to manage, amblyopia - either as the main disorder causing impaired vision or as a contributing condition. The 2010 Annual Evidence Update focuses on the clinical and functional outcomes of amblyopia and highlights the:

· clinical outcomes of treatment - focusing on aspects of visual acuity, stereopsis, and ocular alignment;
· functional outcomes of treatment - focusing on aspects of quality of life and visual functioning;
· adverse events of treatment;
· new evidence that is likely to inform a change in clinical practice;
· current uncertainties in the effectiveness of treatments.

Commentaries have been provided by Jugnoo Rahi, Reader in Ophthalmic Epidemiology/Honorary Consultant Ophthalmologist, Institute of Child Health UCL; Jill Carlton, Research Associate, ScHARR, University of Sheffield and Mike Clarke, Reader in Ophthalmology, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Antenatal and pregnancy care (NHS Evidence - women's health)
NHS Evidence - women's health is holding its next Annual Evidence Update from Monday 27 September. The Antenatal Care Evidence Update builds on the accumulated knowledge-base and provides an up-to-date summary of the latest evidence in this area including the provision of antenatal care, patient information needs, common pregnancy problems, antenatal ultrasound and fetal monitoring. All the information contained in our AEU has been subject to rigorous selection criteria. We know it is very difficult for busy health professionals to keep up-to-date with the huge volume of literature that is published each year and so the specialist collections are here to do this for you.

Hepatitis B and C (NHS Evidence - gastroenterology and liver diseases)
The Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases Specialist Collection is launching its fourth Annual Evidence Update on Hepatitis B and C on Monday 26 July 2010. The Project Team has carried out a systematic literature search on Hepatitis B and C to identify all high level evidence published since the date of the last Hepatitis B and C AEU in 2009, including guidelines, systematic reviews, health technology assessments and economic evaluations. Leading experts from around the UK have read and appraised these for their validity and relevance to the busy clinician. A list of the papers deemed worthy of inclusion, along with expert commentaries by our reviewers, will be freely available on the site at from that date.

Hip Fracture (NHS Evidence - trauma and orthopaedics and NHS Evidence - emergency and urgent care)
On 26 July 2010, ‘NHS Evidence - trauma and orthopaedics’ in conjunction with ‘NHS Evidence - emergency and urgent care’ will release an Annual Evidence Update on Hip Fracture. The scope of the literature search covers fractures affecting the proximal femur. This Annual Evidence Update will appeal to all health professionals, reflecting the multidisciplinary approach required across both primary and secondary care. However, there may be clinicians who are involved in the management of polytrauma and high energy injuries that affect the hip joint who will find that our update is offset from their area of interest.

NHS Evidence - women's health is holding its next Annual Evidence Update from Tuesday 1 June. The update aims to provide clinicians with the most up-to-date knowledge on the diagnosis and management of heavy menstrual bleeding. We know that it is very difficult for busy clinicians to keep up-to-date with the huge volume of literature that is published each year and so the women's health specialist collection does this for you so that you don't have to!

Atrial fibrillation (NHS Evidence - cardiovascular)
This update for health professionals and patients will present significant advances in knowledge about atrial fibrillation since our last update in June 2009. Topics will include medication, cardioversion, prevention of stroke, catheter ablation therapy and surgical treatment. This year we've also identified new systematic reviews on genetics and atrial fibrillation. As usual expert summaries with be included on this and the other topics identified to help make sense of the new evidence presented.

Drugs misuse (NHS Evidence - National Library for Public Health)
The National Library for Public Health will publish its second Annual Evidence Update on drugs misuse. The theme for this update is Drugs misuse treatment in offender populations. This year, as well as identifying a number of new guidelines and key policy documents, we have focussed on treatments for female offenders. We have teamed up with experts in the field of drugs addiction to evaluate the evidence and put it into context.

Osteoporosis and fragility fractures (NHS Evidence - musculoskeletal)
NHS Evidence - musculoskeletal will release their latest Annual Evidence Update on osteoporosis and fragility fractures. We have sifted the publications in this area in the 12 months up to May 2010 and have concentrated on highlighting systematic reviews, these being the most reliable and least biased evidence available to guide practice and improve knowledge in this area. We hope that, once released, you will take a look. Your feedback would be very welcome.

Age Related Macular Degeneration (NHS Evidence - eyes and vision)
Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is one of the commonest causes of certifiable visual impairment in the UK. The 2010 Evidence Update focuses on the management of neovascular (wet) AMD and highlights the:

· key evidence base underpinning current interventions (key randomised controlled trials and current guidance);
· new evidence that is likely to inform a change in clinical practice;
· emerging evidence for Lucentis, Avastin and combination treatments from key RCTs that have recently reported at scientific conferences but not yet published in peer reviewed literature;
· current uncertainties in the effectiveness of treatments.

Commentaries have been provided by Robin Hamilton, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon and Praveen Patel, Consultant Ophthalmologist, Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and by Angela Reidy and Darwin Minassian, EpiVision.

Homeopathy (NHS Evidence - complementary and alternative medicine)
The NHS Evidence - complementary and alternative medicine specialist collection will present an Annual Evidence Update (AEU) on Homeopathy from 14 June. This update will provide a summary of systematic reviews, meta-analyses, RCTs and other relevant studies published in the twelve months since the 2009 AEU on Homeopathy.

Oesophago-gastric Cancers (NHS Evidence - cancer; NHS Evidence - gastroenterology and liver diseases)
The second Annual Evidence Update on Oesophago-gastric Cancer will be prepared jointly by NHS Evidence - cancer and NHS Evidence - gastroenterology and liver diseases on 21 June 2010. It will include systematic reviews and guidance published since the last Annual Evidence Update in June 2009, clinical commentary by Dr. Jamshed B. Bomanji (on FDG PET) and an overview by Dr Chris Alcock.

Health needs of people with Learning Disabilities (NHS Evidence - learning disabilities)
People with learning disabilities have a higher level of health needs than the general population, many of which are unmet. The Health Needs Annual Evidence Update 2010 will provide bibliographies of published research for the following key health issues:
· Cancer
· Challenging behaviour
· Coronary heart disease
· Epilepsy
· Respiratory illness.

Searches for new evidence have been conducted across a range of databases and supplementary hand searching has been conducted by John Northfield, the Project Lead. All citations found in the searches have been sifted by the Project Lead to identify those most relevant to the subject scope of the Annual Evidence Update. There has also been input from professional referees, who are experts in their fields, to review the findings prior to publication. John Northfield has also compiled the summaries for the update.

Rhinitis (NHS Evidence - ENT & audiology)
The Annual Evidence Update for rhinitis will present a concise collection of emerging research evidence from the past 12 months. Multiple databases have been searched to identify relevant guidelines and systematic reviews, which have undergone quality assessment prior to inclusion. Therapeutic uncertainties have also been updated to highlight priority research topics.

Skin cancer (NHS Evidence - cancer & NHS Evidence - skin disorders)
This is the third Annual Evidence Update on Skin Cancer run jointly by NHS Evidence – cancer and NHS Evidence – skin disorders and published to correspond with Sun Awareness Week. It presents the results of a search for new guidance and systematic reviews that have appeared since last year’s Annual Evidence Update. There will also be expert commentaries discussing the significance of the new evidence in a variety of topic areas. The update of the Annual Evidence Update on skin cancer provides an opportunity to present an up-to-date comprehensive collection of systematic reviews and guidance that have been published since May 2009 and have been subject to rigorous selection criteria. Information is organised by topic areas and links are provided within each topic to the relevant systematic reviews, guidelines and patient information.

Cystic Fibrosis (NHS Evidence - respiratory & NHS Evidence - genetic conditions)
This will be an update of the first Annual Evidence Update for Cystic Fibrosis published in 2009. It will present the latest evidence in the field of cystic fibrosis published in the last 12 months, highlighting major publications and implications for practice. Updates on Cochrane protocols and reviews needed, as identified by the Cochrane Cystic Fibrosis and Genetic Disorders Group, will also be published as part of the Annual Evidence Update.

To mark the start of National Smile Month 2010, NHS Evidence – oral health is presenting an Annual Evidence Update covering all aspects of oral health. The specialist collection team has systematically identified and appraised the best available evidence (systematic reviews) which is presented, along with recently published guidelines. The Update covers the range of oral health topics with commentaries from experts in the field.

New specialist collection launched

In December 2009 NHS Evidence launched a new specialist collection called Quality and Productivity to provide real-life examples of how staff are improving quality and productivity throughout the NHS.

Evidence is organised around care pathways such as:

Cardiac Rehabilitation (NHS Evidence - cardiovascular)
Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) is an important aspect of high quality care for (in particular) the patient who has had a heart attack or undergone cardiac surgery or intervention. Access to CR remains low, as highlighted through the National Audit, and NHS Improvement are leading a national priority project to help more patients to benefit. We are publishing an Annual Evidence Update on cardiac rehabilitation which draws together the evidence from systematic reviews and other high quality research and guidance published in the past year, building on our last three Updates. We have been greatly assisted by the NHS Improvement-Heart CR team and expert reviewers from the British Association for Cardiac Rehabilitation.

Colorectal cancer (NHS Evidence - cancer)
NHS Evidence – cancer is publishing its 2010 Annual Evidence Update on colorectal cancer on the 12 April. It will include a guest editorial by Alan Horgan (Consultant Colorectal Surgeon Nuffield Health Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospital), as well as a list of the latest systematic reviews and guidance published about colorectal cancer since April 2009, patient information and the latest uncertainties about the effects of treatment in colorectal cancer (UK DUETs).

Pain (NHS Evidence - supportive and palliative care)
The 2010 Annual Evidence Update (AEU) on pain in supportive and palliative care is the fourth in our series. Previous AEUs have covered general aspects of pain management in cancer and chronic diseases as well as special situations like pain in dementia and specific treatments such as cannabinoids. This year we are revisiting general pain management in both cancer and non-cancer chronic disease patients to allow clinicians and researchers to keep up to date on the rapid changes in this area.

Schizophrenia (NHS Evidence - mental health)
The Schizophrenia Annual Evidence Update (AEU) contains the best available evidence published on schizophrenia during 2009.

NHS Evidence - complementary and alternative medicine will present its fourth Annual Evidence Update on Acupuncture from 19 April. This update will include a comprehensive list of systematic reviews, meta-analyses and large-scale RCTs accompanied by an expert summary of the best-available evidence.

Obesity (NHS Evidence - National Library for Public Health)
The National Library for Public Health will launch the 2010 Annual Evidence Update on childhood obesity from 19 April 2010, focusing on childhood obesity surveillance and preventative public health interventions. The Annual Evidence Update includes a number of key policy documents and guest editorials written by experts, which provide a snapshot of the preventative interventions for childhood obesity and international surveillance activities.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (NHS Evidence - musculoskeletal)
NHS Evidence - musculoskeletal have produced an Annual Evidence Update on Rheumatoid Arthritis. Having searched the literature for high quality evidence that has accumulated within the last year, NHS Evidence - musculoskeletal have focused on guidance and systematic reviews published before March 2010. As in recent years the majority of publications relate to various aspects of drug treatments. Although this constitutes a proportion of the clinical activity in relation to this disease, other important developments and various aspects of rheumatoid disease management also feature prominently in our update. This Annual Evidence Update should be of particular interest to all health professionals working in this field.

Supporting people in later life (NHS Evidence - later life)
The purpose of this Annual Evidence Update is to highlight important secondary research, guidelines and policy documents which will help health professionals to support older people who are experiencing challenges with independent living due to serious health problems. Our focus is on material that falls outside the scope of subject-specific Annual Evidence Updates, such as mental health or cardiovascular disease. This means grappling with challenging search topics such as frailty, long-term conditions and complex morbidities as well as the different settings in which support can be provided for these patients.

Leading MS experts from around the UK have read and appraised these for their validity and relevance to the busy clinician. Prostate cancer (NHS Evidence – cancer)
This will be the third annual evidence update on prostrate cancer prepared by NHS Evidence – cancer. It will include the systematic reviews and guidance that have been published since March 2009.

Critical illness rehabilitation (NHS Evidence – surgery, anaesthesia, perioperative and critical care)
This update reviews evidence published between June 2008 and December 2009, using the NICE Guideline ‘Rehabilitation after critical illness’ (CG083) as its reference document. It covers the physical and non-physical consequences of critical illness including muscle weakness, anxiety and cognitive impairment. The evidence will be accompanied by peer-reviewed expert commentaries.

Hearing disorders (NHS Evidence – ENT and audiology)
Research on hearing disorders continues to proliferate and this evidence update will present a concise summary of the latest expert-reviewed primary and secondary research, combined with a list of current therapeutic uncertainties to prioritise future research. Multiple databases have been searched to capture all emerging evidence for the period January-December 2009.

Retinal vein occlusions (NHS Evidence – eyes and vision)
Guidance from The Royal College of Ophthalmologists and NICE formed the benchmark for the AEU and the following topics have been covered:

Two East Lancashire doctors have recently had a paper published in Clinical Medicine as part of the Lesson of the Month series.

Dr Ariyaratnam (Consultant in Rheumatology and Rehabilitation) and Dr Burke (Consultant in Rheumatology) who are both based at Burnley General Hospital, collaborated with Dr S. Pande of Changi General Hospital, Singapore to produce their paper on hereditary haemochromatosis.

New books published by ELHT staff

2009 was a busy year for two ELHT staff, both Dr David Grimes and Sheena Byrom have had books published.

Dr Grimes book "Vitmain D and Cholesterol: the importance of the sun" was published in April 2009 and copies are available from both the Blackburn and Burnley libraries. Further information and updates to the book are available here.

Sheena Byrom had two books published. The first was "Midwifery Birth Stories" published in February 2009. This was followed in November by "Essential Midwifery Practice: Postnatal care" which forms part of a series of books including "Essential Midwifery Practice: Public Health" which was published in 2007 and is available from the Blackburn and Burnley libraries. Both these new books will also be available from the library early in the new year.

We have just taken delivery of over 200 brand new fiction books including some 2009 bestsellers and award winners.

This scheme invites less confident readers to read six books such as the Quick Reads and record their reading in a diary.

Historical and contemporary images from the Wellcome Library's collections are now freely available for downloading.

The constantly updated biomedical collection holds over 40,000 images and covers disease, surgery, general healthcare, sciences from genetics to neuroscience.

You can register for free to use the lightbox feature which allows you to store selections of images during different visits to the site and allows you to order images online. By registering you will also have access to clinical images.

The images have been made available through a creative commons licence to allow them to be used for non commercial purposes.

Yes, it has undergone a complete redesign to make it easier to use.

Intute now has free tutorials on its Virtual Training Suite. There are over 60 tutorials which offer guidance on the use of the internet for education and research. They focus on academic resources and provide guidance on how to critically evaluate material found on the web.

Tutorials are available for:

Health and Social Care
Medicine
Microbiology
Midwifery
Nursing

They are produced by subject specialists from UK universities and are aimed at students. They include practical exercises, quizzes and a 'link basket' which allows you to keep a record of all the websites covered in the session.

Pubmed MyNCBI - new features

If you have a MyNCBI account in Pubmed you might be interested to know that there are new features which allow you to make your Collections public, so you can share them with colleagues.

A new resource is available from TRIP (Turning Research into Practice) - TRIP ANSWERS.

TRIP answers is a repository of clinical questions and answers drawn from a number of sources around the world. Creating a resource where clinicians can easily find answers to their question and create a clinical Q&A ‘space’ where users can share their own Q&As.

Mackenzie Healthcare Library

The UCLAN and ELHT libraries based at Burnley General Hospital have merged to create a multidisciplinary partnership to provide information services and support to all students and health professionals based at the site.

The UCLAN library has moved in with the Mackenzie Healthcare Library.

Facilities include 10 computers, quiet area for individual study and a bookable group study/seminar room.

JAMA full-text from 1883 - present

Access to the full JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) archives from 1883 - 1998 is now available. This is in addition to the existing subscription which gives access from 1998 - present.

You can access the archives by:

searching from the Search Specialist Databases (HDAS) on NHS Evidence
selecting the JAMA and Archives link from your My Athens - Local Resources list
going to the JAMA website

If you are off on your holidays this summer don't forget to call into your Trust Library to pick up some leisure reading.

Both the Blackburn and Burnley Libraries have a fiction collection which is available to all members of staff. Books are issued for 4 weeks and can be renewed.

The collection comprises of classics including Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte and Charles Dickens. More recent titles are also available such as the Da Vinci Code and The Last King of Scotland, and for those of you who enjoy a bit of chick lit you won't be disappointed as Sophie Kinsella and Marian Keyes are amongst our collection.

NHS COPYRIGHT

The new copyright licence for NHS England is now in place. It has been backdated from 1st April 2008 and will last until 31st March 2010.

Terms & Conditions

The range of users has been widened and now includes anybody employed by, working for and contracted by the NHS. This includes HE students on placement and independently contracted staff.

The following key points are unchanged:

Copying must be for NHS purposes

The originals must be owned by the NHS

You may copy up to 2 articles from a journal issue (more from a themed issue) or 1 chapter or 5% of a book

Within these limits you may make as many multiple copies as required for a specific purpose

Copies from books and journals published in the UK may be scanned

Scanned copies may be supplied via the NHS network but not placed on intranets or websites

Only single paper copies may be made for patients and carers

Publications in the CLA list of excluded categories and works are not covered by the licence

Where you cannot make copies under these terms the Fair Dealing provision of the 1988 Copyright, Designs & Patent Act applies. This means you can only make a single copy of 1 article from a journal.

The CLA licence only covers published paper books and journals; it does not cover e-books, e-journals or other digital materials, newspapers or other types of copyright work.

Do I need to display anything?

You will need to display copyright notices next to any photocopying or scanning equipment you use. You can download a poster from the NLH website.

Can I still order photocopies of articles from the library?

Yes, for articles that are not available in the library we can obtain copies for you. However you must sign a copyright declaration beforehand which we need to keep. A copy of the request form is available from the library or you can download one from our website. Please note there is a non-refundable charge of £2 for each requested article.

Don't forget many full-text journals are available online with an NHS Athens account. Details of these can be found on the NLH My Journals website.

The library has purchased the Medi-Vision Films series of medical teaching DVD's, currently consisting of 58 titles. These are a unique clinical teaching resource made for medical professionals by medical professionals.

ETOCS (Electronic Table of Contents) - be notified by email when new content goes online to your chosen journals. This enables you to receive the latest articles, full text wherever possible, direct to your desktop.

Book Alerts - receive an email from the library informing you when new books have been added to stock within your chosen areas of interest.

Zetoc Alerts (British Library’s electronic journal contents alerting service) - if we do not subscribe to your favourite journal, but you would like to receive the latest contents page you can sign up personally to ZETOC.

Health Management - we subscibe to this daily news service produced by the Library at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. If you would like to be added to the distribution list please email us.

Healthcare Today - provides at a glance summaries of all the main news stories in healthcare both around the UK and across the world. Sign up for a free weekly news summary delivered to your email highlighting the week's most important health and healthcare related news articles at a glance, upcoming healthcare events and latest jobs. If you would like to be added to the distribution list please email us.

A booklet is available from the library with information on these services and the subject areas in which we offer etocs. It also includes a form to sign up for etocs and book alerts. From NLH to NHS Evidence

On 30th April 2009 the National Library for Health will become part of the new NHS Evidence. While the site will look different you should not see any reduction in available resources, information or functionality.

NHS Evidence will become the first point of contact for health and social care staff to access evidence and related information including research data and local experience. It will cover more than the NLH remit:

Covering both health and social care
Users will include clinical practitioners and commissioners
Will not host content but search and accredit external sources of information

You will still be able to use your NHS Athens account to access the health care databases and full-text journals. Search 2.0 will also still be available to perfom an advanced search of the health care databases.
